Deanna Yerichuk receives Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance Award for Teaching Excellence

Please join the Faculty of Music in congratulating Assistant Professor Deanna Yerichuk who has been honoured as a 2019 recipient of the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) Award for Teaching Excellence.

Undergraduate students at Laurier chose Deanna Yerichuk for the award, which recognizes educators who excel at unlocking the potential of Ontario’s young people. Yerichuk started at Laurier in 2017, providing leadership and teaching in Canada’s first and only Bachelor of Music: Community Music program.

“It’s such an honour to receive this award,” says Yerichuk. “The Community Music program is only in its third year and the students have had a significant hand in shaping our curriculum. They are really what makes this program so outstanding, so I’m humbled that they nominated me.”

“An excellent instructor will be able to engage their students in the process of learning and discovery and help them develop the thinking and learning skills that form the foundation of a high quality educational experience,” states the OUSA web site. “With this in mind, the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance annually presents its teaching awards to professors from each of our member campuses that have taken this role to heart and have been selected by their students as examples of teaching excellence.”

Having completed her Master of Education at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education and her PhD in Music Education at the University of Toronto, Yerichuk possesses a breadth of experience in research, vocal performance within all genres, and teaching. Her wealth of experience allows Laurier students to be on the cutting edge of the community music discipline.
