Laurier participating in international community music research event

Faculty from the Laurier Centre for Music in the Community (LCMC) are presenting their research at an international research intensive hosted by the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Germany. The virtual event, taking place from Nov. 2 to 4, will feature more than 30 graduate students and a dozen scholars discussing their work in the field of community music.

Lee Willingham, director of LCMC, and Gerard Yun, assistant professor of community music at Laurier, will both present at the conference. Willingham will present “Uncovering the reciprocal relationship between community music research and practice” on Monday Nov. 2 and Yun will present “Sounding Outward - Looking Inward: The Contemplative in Community Music” on Nov. 3.

“The global reach of community music scholarship is producing research that addresses some of the most challenging social issues of our day,” says Willingham. “I am thrilled to see so many graduate students presenting their work.”

Zoom links and a full schedule are available here. Student presentations are closed until after the event when they will be posted to the Community Music Learning YouTube channel. The channel will serve as a valuable resource for future researchers in the community music field.

Funded by Germany’s international exchange agency, DAAD, the winter research intensive was planned in collaboration with LCMC, the International Centre for Community Music and other participating universities including the University of Limerick and York St. John University in the U.K.
