Indigenous Field of Study launches Educator's Certificate in Indigegogy

The Indigenous Field of Study*, Masters of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University would like to announce the launch of The Centre for Indigegogy: Indigenous Centred Wholistic Development.

Indigegogy is a term coined by Stan Wilson, a Cree elder and educator. Indigegogy means using Indigenous knowledge, and Indigenous ways of learning to create and provide education. This unique insight is increasingly important across Canada as a response to the needs of Indigenous students and communities as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The Indigenous Educator's Certificate in Indigegogy is designed for educators who wish to develop the capacity for bringing Indigenous ways of knowing and learning to their curriculum. It will provide an opportunity for educators to build capacity and participate in training in an experiential manner using Indigegogy practices. Educators will then be able to adopt and translate their new knowledge into community specific and culturally relevant contexts within their specific Indigenous territories, traditions, languages, cultures and work place.

There are seven modules for the Certificate in Indigegogy. Throughout each module, the focus will be on the learning process through experiential, reflexive and practice based learning. Each module is completed over three days (21 hours total) in the Circle Room, Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work (120 Duke St., Kitchener). 

Module 1: Stepping into Your Centre

• Dates: Aug. 17 to 19, 2017

Engaging in Indigegogy requires grounded and centred educators. This inaugural module is foundational to introducing participants to Indigegogy. It provides experiential learning for participants as they begin to “Step into the Centre” of themselves and their learning journey. This module will be facilitated both in circle and on the land. It will aim to increase the participants’ awareness and understanding of self in their wholistic teaching and learning journey. Participants will be asked to be open to ceremony.

• Module 7: Honoring the Land in Education (October 2018) 

Registration

Registration is available through our online course store. Early Registration for “Stepping into Your Centre” is July 7, 2017. A 5% discount will apply. Certificates will be awarded upon completion of five modules (105 hours of instruction).

Participants can also choose to take all seven modules and receive an Advanced Level of Certification.
