Print | PDFWilfrid Laurier University will fly the rainbow flag during June in support of Pride Month. The flag will be raised on June 1 at 11 a.m. and will be streamed live on Instagram.
Flying the rainbow flag symbolizes Laurier’s commitment to honouring the identities, experiences, and contributions of the LGBTQ2S+ community and their continuing struggle for social, political, and economic equality.
The university recognizes that addressing transphobia, homophobia, and biphobia includes a commitment to seeking equity for marginalized LGBTQ2S+ community members and that their individual experiences are unique based on intersectional identities such as gender, sexuality, Indigeneity, race, class, ability, age, religion and citizenship.
Promoting diversity and a culture of inclusivity is a Laurier hallmark. It is embedded in the university’s official statement of Values, Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles and encouraged across the university. Flying the rainbow flag is one way of reminding the university community that intentional and necessary measures are needed to create an environment where everyone can live authentically.
There are many different pride flags, each representing a diversity of sexualities and gender identities. Laurier’s campuses in Waterloo, Brantford and Kitchener will fly the first rainbow pride flag created by Gilbert Baker in the late 1970s which represents liberation and hope.
Laurier’s Pride Month events will take place virtually to keep the community safe amid COVID-19.
June 1 and 19: The Centre for Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will take over Laurier’s institutional Instagram account to share inspiring LGBTQ2S+ content. Follow along at @wilfridlaurieruni. Additional virtual events and resources are posted online.
June 24: The Office of Dispute Resolution and Sexual Violence Support and Human Resources will host the workshop “Creating Gender-Inclusive Environments and Practices” on June 24 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom. Laurier staff, managers, and unit leaders can register through Laurier’s online training and registration portal.
Laurier student club Consent is Golden has virtual events planned throughout Pride Month, including “Conversations for Two-Spirit and Queer Indigenous Folks” virtual panel and a queering art workshop. Visit the Consent is Golden Facebook page for more information.
