1.00 To widen and enrich the University community and to enhance the expertise available to faculty and students within an academic unit or research or other University academic centre on a continuing basis, Adjunct Faculty appointments may be granted to persons within or without the University who carry out on-going responsibilities related to research, academic programming, and/or professional academic activities.
2.01 Adjunct appointments are made by the Vice-President: Academic and Provost on the recommendation of the Dean of an Academic Unit for a specified period of up to three years (renewable). These appointments will carry the title of Adjunct Faculty and will be listed as Adjunct Faculty on the VP: Academic web page.
2.02 Adjunct Faculty are not replacements for full- or part-time faculty. Adjunct Faculty are not Members of the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association; they are not covered under the terms of the Collective Agreement, and are not eligible for University benefits or pension plan coverage. Adjunct Faculty positions are not compensable.
i. Recommendations originate with support from a tenure-track or tenured member of Laurier faculty and must be supported by the Chair (or equivalent) of an academic unit or Director of a research or other University academic centre. Recommendations are submitted to an appropriate Dean who shall decide whether to recommend the appointment to the Vice-President: Academic and Provost.
ii. If supported, the Dean forwards a request for appointment, outlining the nature of the responsibilities and suggested length of appointment, together with the candidate's current curriculum vitae, to the Vice-President: Academic and Provost.
iii. The Vice-President: Academic and Provost decides on the recommendation, and if accepted, forwards a letter to the candidate outlining the terms of the appointment. In cases of recommendations arising from a research centre, the Vice-President: Research shall also be consulted.
Note: Adjunct Faculty wishing to serve as a co-advisor for a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, be a member of a graduate advisory or examination committee, and/or teach a graduate course, must be appointed to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
