Today, anti-trans and anti-2SLGBTQQIA+ demonstrations took place, and are continuing to happen across the country, under the banner 1 Million March 4 Children, advocating for the elimination of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity curriculums in Canada. I recognize that these marches and demonstrations will have a significant effect on members of our community.
The rise in anti 2SLGBTQQIA+ rhetoric in Canada and around the world is deeply problematic, and as we have seen with recent events, can result in significant harm to members in our community. I want everyone to know that Laurier leadership stands in solidarity with our colleagues, students and friends in the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community, and we stand united against hate and bigotry. For those needing support today, I encourage you to reach out to the resources listed at the bottom of this email. For those who want to gather in solidarity and support, today and tomorrow, the We Believe Survivors Solidarity Art Jam is taking place on our campuses. Representatives from the Centre for Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (CSEDI) and the Wellness Centre will be present.
Today and every day, the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community and members of marginalized communities deserve support, care, solidarity, action and safety.
Sincerely,
Deborah MacLatchy
President and Vice-Chancellor
