I received my PhD in Government from Cornell University in 2002. I have been a visiting research fellow at the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Social Science several times, most recently in 2008. In 2009-2010, I was an S.V. Ciriacy-Wantrup visiting research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining Laurier, I was an assistant professor at Trent University from 2002 to 2006. I hold a cross-appointment to the Balsillie School of International Affairs. I grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
My main research interests are in international political economy, Japanese politics, the political economy of East and Southeast Asia, the history and theory of capitalism, and the political economy of food, land, agriculture, the environment and climate change. My current research projects are on the role of decommodification in the expansion of capitalism and on the extent to which and ways in which Canadian universities report greenhouse gas emissions resulting from air travel. Until December 2022 I was the Chair of the WLUFA Climate Action Committee and the Balsillie School Global Climate Action Committee.
