I received my PhD in English Literature from Queen's University at Kingston in 1988, my MA from the University of Toronto in 1984, and my BA from the University of Waterloo in 1983. Prior to joining Laurier I taught at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia for twenty-five years, and was Dean of Arts there from 2010 to 2015.
The main focus of my research is the fiction of Thomas Hardy. I am currently the General Editor of the Cambridge University Press Edition of the Novels and Stories of Thomas Hardy. I have also published on other Victorian authors such as Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Wilkie Collins.
