Dr. Rowsell grew up in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he studied both tuba performance and composition at Memorial University in Newfoundland. In 2018, he graduated from the University of Toronto with a Doctor of Musical Arts in tuba performance.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Faculty of Music team at Laurier,” said Dr. Jonathan Rowsell. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with such a wonderful community of musicians!”
Dr. Rowsell is a proud Eastman Performing Artist and works as a freelance tuba player performing with various groups including the Trillium Brass Quintet, Hannaford Street Silver Band, London Symphonia, Hamilton Philharmonic, Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, Esprit Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, and the Stratford Festival.
He is in demand as a brass clinician and teacher, having held positions at both Memorial University and Western University’s Don Wright Faculty of Music. In addition, Dr. Rowsell is an enthusiastic composer and arranger and has had his works for brass performed and recorded in Canada and abroad.
“I’m delighted to welcome Dr. Rowsell to Laurier Music." said Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner, dean of the Faculty of Music. "He brings a wealth of experience and talent to the school and I’m excited for his leadership.
