I received my PhD in social work from Smith College in Massachusetts, U.S.A., in 1993 and my MSW from Laurier in 1974.
Prior to joining Laurier’s Faculty of Social Work in 1994, I practiced front-line social work for 20 years in London, Ontario in the context of inpatient and outpatient mental health settings and in a child welfare agency. I developed expertise in individual and group work with a wide range of clients and particularly with survivors of child sexual abuse.
My research interests include learning more about the effectiveness of single-session therapy provided in walk-in counselling clinics, improving the effectiveness of mental health counselling and interprofessional practice in primary health care, promoting sensitive practice by health professionals when they work with survivors of child abuse and improving social work practice with refugees and immigrants. I was the Principal Investigator of a recently completed CIHR-funded study entitled, "Clinical Outcomes and Cost-Effectiveness of Walk-in Counselling Centres: A Controlled Study."
As I am retiring from my full-time faculty position in December 2014, I am not accepting additional students.
