For Immediate Release
Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Music will offer a new Master of Music program in fall 2024. The two-year Master of Music in Collaboration, Curation and Creative Performance (MMus C3) is designed to help students discover their distinctive artistic identities and equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in Canada’s arts industry.
“Through the MMus C3 program, we aim to empower emerging artists to navigate the complexities of today’s music and performing arts landscape,” said Kimberly Barber, associate dean: external of Laurier's Faculty of Music. “We are excited to offer this transformative program that not only fosters individual artistic growth, but also emphasizes the power of collaboration and community engagement.”
Through a dynamic curriculum that blends academic, research, entrepreneurial, business and creative foundations, students will be challenged to refine who they are as artists and put their strengths into practice through experiential learning placements, creative projects and live performances. Unique in Canada, the MMus C3 program will foster creativity through an emphasis on collaboration, with students engaging in interactive creation with like-minded and diverse artists.
In the first year of the program, courses will provide a solid academic and creative performance foundation for students, embracing diverse musical cultures, instruments, traditions and genres. Students will then participate in experiential learning placements tailored to their interests, including performance, curatorial duties, fundraising and arts administration. Placements will be hosted at partnering arts organizations including FAWN Chamber Creative, Against the Grain Theatre, Connect Music Licensing, Loose Tea Music Theatre, NUMUS and the Open Ears Music Festival of Music and Sound. The program will culminate with a major artistic project in the final term, when students will collaborate to create or curate a new live performance work or works.
Applications for the MMus C3 program will open in November, with a submission deadline of March 30, 2024. Prospective students are invited to join the Faculty of Music for a webinar on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. to learn more about the program and application process. Participants can register through Eventbrite.
