Print | PDFInternational Open Access Week is an annual celebration of advocacy and progress toward free and immediate online access to scholarly research. From Oct. 21 to 27, the Wilfrid Laurier University Library plans to raise awareness and spark campus conversations about access, dissemination, costs, use and ownership of scholarly research outputs.
This year’s local theme is Community Over Commercialization: Exploring Perspectives on Open Scholarship at Laurier. Together with the Office of Research Services, the library is hosting a virtual panel conversation with Laurier researchers and librarians, who will share their perspectives and experiences furthering open scholarship. Themes will include research impact, grant compliance, innovation and public accountability.
The event will take place Oct. 22 from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Zoom. Panelists include:
Open-access (OA) is a form of scholarly communication focused on the dissemination of digital research materials online, free of charge and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. OA comprises a wide range of scholarly activities and outputs, including open publishing in hybrid or fully open journals, institutional self-archiving, open data, open theses and dissertations, digitized archives, podcasting and open educational resources. There are many benefits of open scholarship, including equity of access, higher rates of article citation and downloads, grant compliance, public accountability, transparency in research, and broad and diverse readership.
Visit the Laurier Library website for OA resources and supports.
