Working as a Student

There are lots of reasons to work part-time as a student: make money for expenses or extra spending, gain work experience in Canada, or to be part of the community. If you’re interested in working part-time, first consider:

  • If the job will take away from your time to study and do coursework. You want to make sure you can still focus on your classes.
  • If your study permit allows you to work in Canada. You’ll need a social insurance number (SIN), whether you work on campus or off campus.
  • If you’re up to date on the latest from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada site. Information about working in Canada can change, so be sure you check.
Part-time jobs are posted online throughout the year for both on- and off-campus opportunities. You may want to start with the International Student Work Experience Program (ISWEP), which is exclusive to international students, or the annual on-campus career expo. The Career Centre can also help in your job search.

The Canadian Experience Class provides an opportunity for international students to apply for permanent resident status once they have graduated from a university and have one year of work experience.
